About RhinoCrashEthiopia

RhinoCrashEthiopia is the result of one family’s experiences while adopting their daughter from Ethiopia. The Mackenzie family adopted Isabella in February of 2008 and when they travelled to Africa to bring her home, they were struck by the beautiful, hardworking people they met there and their devastating circumstances.  As one of the poorest countries in the world, they have also been beset by other outside challenges as well.  The AIDS epidemic that swept through the country in the 1980′s and 90′s decimated the familial structure of the country.  There are very few parents or grandparents in Ethiopia, just children and more children.  Isabella’s mother, Haimanot, was orphaned at age 4 when both parents died, presumably of AIDS.  She was 17 when she had Isabella.  Haimanot’s projected lifespan is only about 37 years.

Now, in 2009, they are in the midst of one of the worst droughts in many, many years.  And along with the drought, a famine.  With the world in recession, the cost of living has doubled.  What used to cost $.50 a day to live now costs $1.

There are over 6 million orphans in Ethiopia.  There are 10 million street children.  This is a monumental time of need for Africa; everyone knows it but very few seem to do anything about it.  Since we love our Ethiopian daughter, we are moved to compassion for her country of birth, her mother, and all of the other orphans still waiting for someone to help.

We’re willing.  Are you?  Come and help us transform a life or two.  What you might find is that YOUR life is the one that gets transformed…
